Julia Baucke is a singer-songwriter in the alternative folk genre, based in Santa Barbara, California. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Julia Baucke (formally Julia Witz) started playing guitar when she was 11 and writing her own songs at 13. Julia studied music at various colleges in Los Angeles, and continued with classical and pop voice lessons. However, stage fright kept her from performing live and she became a professional environmental policy planner for several years. In 1991, Julia moved to Santa Barbara, where she met Jimmy Messina (of Loggins and Messina) and joined his Songwriting Performance Workshops, which greatly helped develop and refine her songwriting and performance skills. And Mr. Messina did a number on that ol’ stage fright problem too. Julia then performed in venues around Santa Barbara, including Soho Nightclub, El Presidio Chapel, and The Center Stage Theatre. She's also performed at a number of community events, including the Lemon Festival, and participates in music benefits to help fund music education in public schools. In 2002, after Kevin McCormick (Jackson Browne, Melissa Ethridge, Keb’ Mo) heard her songs, he graciously offered to produced her debut CD. Halfway through the CD, Kevin relocated to Europe for a couple years and Julia continued with local producer Robinson Eikenberry. It was during these sessions that she met Kenny Edwards (Stone Poneys, Linda Ronstadt, Bryndle). Kenny played on the remaining five songs on Never Too Soon, and they forged a close musical kinship and friendship. They sang harmonies on each others songs and conspired to co-write more. In late 2009, Kenny offered to produce Julia’s second CD. The first step was to produce demos of the songs that she had written over the last few years. A total of eight of these demos were recorded in Kenny’s bedroom studio (he penned his ‘Dirty Cathedral’) in Montecito, CA, from Jan. 2010 to July 2010, just prior to his all-too-soon passing in August 2010. To preserve the work Kenny did, in September 2010, Julia released an EP titled, “The Dirty Cathedral Sessions, with Kenny Edwards”. The EP contains five of the eight demos produced by Kenny. The EP is dedicated with love to Kenny, an always brilliant, always humble, spot-on musician and dear friend, whose heart and spirit ran as true as his music. Nearly all instruments on the EP are played by Kenny. He also sings harmony on two of the five songs.
